BETHANY BRAINE - MEDIA IN TRANSITION

INTRODUCTION:

The case study I have chosen to explore across time is the Die Hard film series with Bruce Willis and many other successful actors such as Samuel L. Jackson. I will be focusing on Die Hard (1988), and Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995). I have chosen to apply the key concepts of ideology and textual poaching, which I believe can complement each other as well as provide conflict. The main argument from analysing this case study and concepts is that both films inspired as much textual poaching as was physically able with the un-advanced internet between 1988 and 1995. Also, that fans had ideological preconceptions of both films and some reflections of social groups may be misinterpreted.

CONCLUSION:

To conclude, ideology and textual poaching are both interesting concepts to analyse and when put against two Die Hard films across a period of 7 years, bode for a challenge. However, with added contribution from key academic reading as well as wider academic reading of books and online sources, Die Hard accepts both concepts into its’ action packed story line. Much textual poaching of both films was created and clear evidence from supporting theorists show a positive correlation in the advancement of the internet and textual poaching. Also, there were clearly ideological preconceptions of both films but the box office figures shows nobody was let down by either. The reflection of the coloured group in Die Hard may now, in 2017, be misinterpreted as the stereotype was that of coloured people more than 20 years ago. Let’s not forget… ideology is a world view and textual poaching is how fans try and impact the world with their contributions.
